Is Jesus Just A Committee Member?

“But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. ‘Save me, Lord!’ He shouted.” Matthew 14:30

Ray Ortlund makes an interesting observation about our hearts when he says that we are not integrated, whole, persons as we should be. Instead, our hearts are divided. Picture the boardroom in your heart: there’s a big table, nice leather chairs, coffee, bottled water, maybe a whiteboard. A committee sits around the table: the social self, the private self, the work self, the sexual self, the recreational self, the religious self, and any others you may add. This committee is constantly arguing. It’s always agitated and rarely able to reach a unanimous decision. We tell ourselves we’re this way inside because we’re busy with so many responsibilities. But the truth is, we’re just divided and unfocused. You have two options concerning Jesus. You can invite Him in to sit on one of the committees, maybe giving him a vote or two. This really just makes him become one more complication in your life. But the other option is to acknowledge that your life, as is, just isn’t working and you need Him to come in and fire every last committee in your heart. The second option is the only path to lasting transformation. In Matthew 14, Peter started out with great enthusiasm but began to sink when he took his focus off Jesus. His short prayer, “Save me, Lord!”, captures your constant need for Christ’s saving power. His cry for salvation is your own invitation to set aside the distractions and divisions in your heart and refocus your whole self back on Jesus. So why not do that today? Invite him to not merely join your life, but to change it and lead it.
